First horizontal-vertical elevators in the world are now a thing

Horizontal-vertical elevators! German elevator manufacturer ThyssenKrupp has created a groundbreaking system–the world’s first rope-less, horizontal-vertical elevator system, it’s called ‘Multi.’

Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory isn’t too far away from us.

The new elevator technology uses a system of magnets and motors to control the cart, rather than the common elevator system that is powered by ropes and rails.

So, what does that mean?

For the first time ever, elevators will have the ability to not only travel vertically, but the ability to travel horizontally to your destination–or even both:

Executive director of The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Antony Wood, has credited the new system as “the biggest development in the elevator industry since the invention of the safety elevator some 165 years ago.”

Multi “enables unprecedented possibilities in the architecture and design of buildings.”

The company reports that Multi can achieve up to 50% larger transport capacity and reduce peak power demand by as much as 60% compared to conventional elevator systems.

The company  claims that “These two factors mean a dramatic improvement for high-rise buildings.”

“Since Multi can move sideways as well as vertically, and without any height limitations, it enables unprecedented possibilities in the architecture and design of buildings,” they add.

More so, since Multi runs on magnets and motors, it requires fewer and smaller shafts than conventional cable operated elevators. ThyssenKrupp claims that with the new technology, builders can increase a building’s usable area by up to 25%. A conventional elevator system can occupy up to 40 per cent of a high-rise building’s floor space.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have one of these in your home? Let us know!
